Factors that Make a Fence Climb-proof

If you are choosing a fence, then you are no stranger to the term 'climb-proof'. So, what makes a fence more climb-proof? Read on for more information.

The height of the fence

Height is probably the most obvious factor. The higher the fence, the longer it takes to climb and the easier it is for an intruder to be detected - either visually or through technology. The combination of the risk of being caught or falling is more likely to deter intruders from climbing the fence. A well-trained attacker will be prepared, possibly in a small organized group, to move through the fence rather than over it.

Density of fences

A fence with a compact density gives intruders no way to place their feet, therefore reducing the space for footholds and making the fence difficult to climb.

Additional tops

Additional tops fitted to anti-climb fences can include
barbed wire
Razor wire
Spinning spikes
Anti-climbing gyros
Rota spikes
Electric pulse fences

Some of these are sharp and spiked at the top, which means that if an intruder touches them or tries to climb over, they could be cut and catch them. This increases the risk of injury to the intruder and therefore may deter them from even trying. It may not stop more specialist attackers, but it will slow them down and give asset security teams a better chance of detecting intruders and defending the situation. When the top is extended outwards, the depth an intruder needs to cross increases, making it more difficult to climb over.
